Introduction 

Indian Premier League commonly known as IPL is Twenty-20 cricket league of India. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was the founder of it and is currently managing it. Every year eight cities of India participate in this league. It is held for two months generally April and May. In 2019, the brand value of IPL was evaluated as ₹475 billion, which is a massive amount. As it is an Indian undertaking, IPL contributes a lot to the Indian GDP. As per reports, in 2015 IPL managed to add ₹11.5 billion to the Indian Economy.

Records 

IPL has recorded itself as the most-attended cricket league in the world. In 2014, the people made it the sixth-largest attended sports league in the world. Until 2010, no sports programs were broadcasted on YouTube. So IPL became the first event to get broadcasted live on YouTube in 2010. 

Rules to be followed by Team Owners

Every event has few rules and regulations to maintain the decorum of the game and the sport. Given below are few rules and regulations to be followed honestly by the team owners. 

1. Acquisition of Players - A team is allowed to acquire players in three ways which are given below.
   1. Annual Player Auction – Players have to sign up for getting listed at the annual player auction where teams bid for the players and the highest bidder acquires the player. The unsold players can sign up for replacement round.
   2. Trading Players – Teams are allowed to trade their players but only in the trading window, which is held two times before and one time after the auction. The trading deal can only be locked with the mutual consent of the player. If the new deal is worth more than the old one, the difference of the amount of the latest and old contract is mutually divided between the player and the former team. BCCI strictly prohibits the trading of a player after the trading window.
   3. Signing replacement - In case a player cannot play a season, the team needs to have a replacement of him. So replacement window is arranged every year where an unsold player can be replaced for a player you want to get rid off.
2. Composition of Squad - Composition of the squad is necessary to keep the play free and fair. Some of the compositions of the team are listed below.
   1. A team should own a squad of 18 to 25 players compulsorily with a limit of 8 overseas players.
   2. In the playing eleven, a team is allowed to play a maximum of 4 overseas players.
   3. Under-19 players who have played first-class or List A cricket are only allowed to be a part of the team.
   4. The salary cap of a squad is restricted to ₹850 million.

Prize Amount

For participating and ending up in the playoffs, teams get price money which may change every season. As of 2019, the total prize money to be distributed was ₹500 million which is distributing between the winner, first runner up, second runner up and the fourth team. The distribution is as follows. 

• Winning Team - ₹200 million
• First runner up - ₹125 million 
• Second runner up - ₹87.5 million 
• Fourth Team - ₹87.5 million 

Other teams are not rewarded, according to the rules of IPL. The rules also state that half of the winning amount should be distributed among the players. It is a mandatory process. 

Teams

IPL is a cricket league where eight teams from 8 different states participate every year. Although there were new teams also in a few seasons, details of these teams are tabulated below.

Defunct Teams

Few teams in IPL debuted from the start or in between but couldn't survive in the competition. These teams withdraw from IPL and could never play again. Such teams are called defunct teams. The teams that left IPL are as follows.

Awards 

IPL has provision for awarding a player who has exceptionally played well in all the matches. From the first match, lists are prepared for various rewards. The awards are as follows. 

• Orange Cap - During the series, a record is maintained and updated after every match, which has the data of players hitting maximum runs. After the end of an IPL season, the batsman scoring most runs is awarded an Orange Cap award along with a certain amount of cheque. After few matches also, according to the record, a player is given an Orange Cap with the team's logo printed on it. It changes after another player beat the previous score. Brendon McCullum was the first player to be presented with the Orange Cap, while Shaun Marsh was the first winner of this award. 

• Purple Cap – Similar to Orange Cap, this award is also maintained during the season. But it is awarded to a bowler who is successful in getting most wickets in the season—the first Purple Cap award earned by Sohail Tanvir.

• Maximum Sixes Award – During a season, there are hundreds of sixes scored by various players. Every player has a contribution in these sixes so to reward him; this award was invented.

• Emerging Player of the Year – IPL has been an open chance for the beginners as most players are getting a chance to in the international cricket after expressing their performance in IPL. This award is given to players under the age of 23 years playing exceptionally well in the tournament. Although this award had a lot of changes in its name, the objective remains the same.

• Fair Play Award – Cricket is a game of gentlemen, but due to some reasons, we may watch players fighting either with each other or with the empire. To keep it under control, IPL has this award which is given to the team with the least bad behaviour and who play fair.

IPL is one of the most quickly growing cricket tournaments in the world. The sponsorship deal of IPL in 2008 was signed at ₹40 crores only while in 2018 it took ₹439.8 crores which is a massive rise. The brand value of IPL as of 2018, is $6.13 billion. It has been broadcasted in over 15 countries including United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, etc. Such factors have made IPL stand at such a position.
